When Hyrule drowns by nna When Hyrule drowns by nna
I drew this composition a bit back, I didn't know if I'd ever have the chance to finish it but I had a random streak of inspiration for it the other day.

Hyrule flooding always kind of bummed me out in Wind Waker.

EDIT: For some reason DA preview is acting strange and won't zoom on this image, I don't know if it's just me but if you are having issues download the full resolution or right click and view image.

Why did the King think he could lock away ganon by flooding Hyrule, when Ganon always manages to pop out free anyways?
Hyrule was friggin awesome, dammit. Although, you think Zelda stayed there because it's the pirate miss that surfaced?
That gloomy ganon-shadow finishes the already gloomy hyrule quite nicely by the way..

He could've asked for them to destroy the entirety of what Ganon is instead.
A bit more practical if ya ask me :P

Isn't he more or less a principal of the Triforce?
You destoy him, you destoy a part of triforce.

You destoy (as aposed to turn into chunks of banana candy) any part of the triforce, everything becomes unbalanced.

I think he just adopted the triforce in Oricana of time so destroying him wouldn't necessary destroy the triforce.
It should actually free it up for another evil force to take it - or a good one..

I had always thought that they were simply the avatars of the respective triforces. Eh, it matters not.

Gorgeous! I love your painting style so much. I haven't played Wind Waker, so I don't really know anything about this scene, but I really like the color scheme. :)

Lovely piece, and my favourite Zelda game by far. That cutscene with the moth and the bed has to be the most cinematic the series has ever been.

this goes to show that windwaker is not just comic and fun, and critics constantly say about it. Which is a good thing.
Windwaker is one of my favs. This game practically got me interested in the series.

Thank you!  And I'm not sure if you've asked as it's a common question, I don't have specific brush names but I like chalky and textured brushes or anything that tries to mimic real media.  One set I found on cg society, the others I've gotten from friends.

This is amazing and very sad at the same time! I was always sad about Hyrule being flooded....and then it happening again at the end of the game just made it worse. I still love Wind Waker. :D

Thinking about Hyrule flooding is not something you want to think about too hard because it's like an apocalypse event set forth by their own gods, super sad.  I seriously get so happy for the brief time you spend in Hyrule at the end of the game, I love that fictional place ;.;

And yeah, WW is a great game.  I don't think I fully appreciated it the first time I played it (I blame the infuriatingly long boat rides) but I really appreciate it upon replay, the art direction, the story, the gameplay, it was definitely a top tier Zelda game.

I really enjoyed spending time in Hyrule too! I would just run around looking at everything. :D I get so caught up in games like this.....I wish I could live there forever! lol

I think I was one of the very few people who loved how WW looked when it first came out. I was like," Oh my gosh look at the lighting and movement in every character!! *gasp* Facial expressions!!!" So many people got caught up in how it looked at first thinking that it would be a childish game, but it was so much more than that! WW is one of my favorite Zelda games for the artwork, story, and gameplay. Though I will agree the sailing did take forever. lol Though the HD WW makes the sailing very bearable now. :)

I really agree about the art direction, I may be biased because I like stylized art but I think that hands down Wind Waker is the prettiest Zelda game.   Actually if I'm really honest I often can't stand the art direction of Zelda games, the older ones I can forgive as "styles of the time" but even recent games have had some really ugly concept art (Twilight Princess is the only one in recent years I like but even then I felt like Zelda and Link's models could have been a lot nicer and the concept art could have been done better.)  But Wind Waker is really beautiful, even if it's a more "chibi" style the backgrounds and stylization are just really cool.

I'm really glad they improved the sailing for the HD game, the first time I played Wind Waker I was just like ".... I miss my horse."  I still kind of prefer Zelda games where I have more control and get to be on land, I get really bored sailing/flying/riding a train.

I have to agree the stylization of the wind waker characters really has to be my favorite. I can give credit for Skyward Sword, but I actually liked some of the concept illustrations more than the final ones. I liked the more water color traditional style they were going for with some of the art work. For me though I really do love more stylized games. The less real it looks the more I fall in love with it!! Next to Wind Waker in art Okami has to be my next favorite for the art style chosen.

Yes I miss having a horse too! I don't mind sailing cause I do like the ocean, but I really do like riding my horse. lol Plus it's easier to fight stuff on a horse. I think the train was the worst one for me. -__- It took alot for me to finish that game.

Wonderfully captured mood.
The Zelda series has from Go been very skilled at quiet tragedy. No matter how upbeat a game may or may not be, for those who look and listen there's always a sad story that came before the Hero comes onto the scene. The king could have maybe left the choice to the living though. Or maybe Ganondorf just learned to lie more sympathetically. Still.

Thank you!  And very true, I really enjoy the sad and dark side of Zelda as much as the more adventurous and silly side.

And haha, yeah, the King didn't really bother to ask Link and Zelda what they wanted. >.>

Ugh i recently replayed it when WWHD came out and i gotta say,*spoilers for those reading who've not played*, the king was kinda a huge jerk. Esp because you find out all ganondorf wanted was prosperity for his people but in effect what happens is the king being like WELL IF I CAN'T HAVE IT ALL TO MYSELF, NO ONE CAN!

c'mon you could have wished for annnythinggg o@ Such a good game, sigh.

I like the King but yeah I agree,  all I can think during the end of the game is "Man, you can have ANYTHING... why you gotta get rid of Hyrule?"  Like it makes sense from a storytelling perspective in a way, but there wasn't a really legit reason why the King had to wish for that in order to get rid of Ganondorf.

I really find Ganon interesting in WW too, he's not the "Mwahaa" villain that he is in some other games.

It makes sense, the first two times i played I didn't question it at all. Years later upon replaying the HD version though it really hit me hard. But i think it makes it a good game though, it kinda puts that layer of not everything being black or white on top of it all. WW Ganondorf is hands down my favorite one, both in his back story and his visual design :D
